Hello September! While we enjoy the last of this years warmth, there’s plenty to do in the garden this month including harvesting crops and tidying.

Here are some other top gardening jobs for September;

In the fruit & veg garden

Keep harvesting crops

By harvesting your crops now, you ensure healthy growth right the way through until the end of autumn

Cut bean and pea plants down

It is ideal to cut your bean and pea plants to ground level once they have finished cropping. Leave the roots which will slowly release nitrogen back into the soil as they break down.

Pick any ripe apples

They should come away easily with a gentle pull when they are ready.

In the flower garden

Deadhead and feed container and hanging basket plants

This ensures your flowers are kept healthy and are encouraged to keep growing.

Plant spring flowering bulbs

Plant your spring flowering bulbs now to ensure beautiful flowers in the spring time.

Keep an eye out for signs of early frosts

Keep a check on the weather forecast for any early frosts and be ready to move any tender plants under cover

In and around the garden

Feed your lawn

Kept your lawn fed and happy by using an autumn fertiliser. This helps your lawn to stay healthy and encourages new growth.

Improve clay soil

Clay soil can become very wet towards the end of the year so its best to improve it before its too late. Digging in some organic matter and horticultural grit is the best way to keep your soil happy.

Cover ponds with netting

The netting will protect your pond from falling leaves and debris.
