The blue holly "Gentle" (Ilex meserveae) is an evergreen and winterproof shrub. It belongs to the Aquifoliaceae family and is a hybrid created from the Ilex opaca and Ilex rugosa.
The shrub has glossy, leathery, green foliage with a lovely blue glow to it. In autumn, the leaves turn purple. The hardy shrub blooms in the spring with white flowers.
The holly is best kept in a sunny or semi-shaded place. Young plants must be protected from weather and drought before they are completely hardy and robust.
